In 1972, when the Salesians departed from the Cathedral Parish, they were presented with an opportunity to oversee another parish within the city. Instead, they chose to establish a 'New Presence' in the impoverished neighborhoods of East Calcutta, specifically at a location known as Gobra. Subsequently, a splendid church, constructed primarily from white marble, was erected and consecrated on January 29, 1995, under the leadership of Fr. Rosario Stroscio and Fr. Sebastian Kuzhipala.
Predominantly inhabited by slum dwellers and individuals from the lower middle class, the parish primarily comprises Bengalis, Adivasis, Anglo-Indians, and Chinese. It operates three satellite centers Motijhil, Nitika, and Dhapa, hosting regular Masses on Sundays and holidays. Notably, the parish encompasses at least seven distinct religious denominations, all actively engaged in its outreach efforts through various means. Moreover, the parish premises include a primary school, along with four additional pre-primary and primary educational institutions spread across different areas.
With a community of over 3000 families, Auxilium Parish stands as one of the largest within the Archdiocese of Kolkata.
