At the request of  Bishop Tiru of Dumka the Salesians begin to  work among the Santals in the diocese of Dumka. With Rampurhat as its centre Fr. John Vaikath starts the mission of Boropohari by opening a parish dedicated to Mary Help of Christians in 1990

The work in Boropohari comprises a parish with boardings for santhal boys and girls. The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians look after the girls' boarding. They also help in the parish activities. The children attend the nearby government primary school up to class IV. Since 2001 the confreres form one community with Don Bosco Joypur.
