In Calcutta city, despite the presence of two established technical schools, a significant portion of youth lacked eligibility for formal technical training. This unfortunate reality, particularly prevalent in impoverished areas, where economic and political circles largely marginalized these young individuals, prompted the compassionate Salesians to initiate a groundbreaking endeavor known as the "Don Bosco Self-Employment Research Institute" (DBSERI) in 1990.
This institute, the brainchild of Br. Thaiparambil Mathew, who commenced preliminary efforts in Liluah in 1979, evolved into a thriving entity upon relocating to Mirpara in 1990. Presently, DBSERI offers training in 15 non-formal trades, boasting recognition from both the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and the Ministry of Technical Education, Government of West Bengal. Moreover, DBSERI actively engages in various outreach programs catering to the needs of the local underprivileged populace, including children and women.
