Bandel Church was founded in 1599 by the Portuguese Augustinians. In 1928 the Shrine was entrusted to the Salesians. The Salesian community of Bandel was canonically erected on 7th March 1933. In 1951 an aspirantate was opened, in 1968 a Retreat House. In 1979 Our Lady’s House Higher Secondary School was opened to day-scholars.

On 8th December 1983 a separate community of “BANDEL SHRINE” was started as a result of the division of the existing community.
