The Salesian College at Sonada, nestled amidst the majestic Himalayan hills, stands as the premier formation center in the Kolkata Province. Affiliated with North Bengal University, it serves as a hub for Salesian students pursuing their B.A. studies while completing essential philosophical training integral to their priestly and Salesian formation.
Originally established in Shillong, the college attained affiliation with Calcutta University up to the I.A. standard in 1935 before affiliating with the University of North Bengal in 1962. Over the years, it has expanded its academic offerings, obtaining approval for B.A. (Hons.) programs in English and History in 1970 and 1979, respectively. Additionally, the college provides Pass Courses in Philosophy, Education, and Economics.
Since June 1999, Salesian College has opened its doors to both male and female students from the general public. Furthermore, it has welcomed seminarians from neighboring dioceses since 2000, allowing them to pursue their philosophical formation alongside degree courses alongside Salesian clerics.
Beyond academic and religious pursuits, Salesian clerics actively engage in various developmental activities, including Village Youth Centers, Scholarship Programs, Typewriting and Spoken English classes for local youth, Youth Camps, and Computer Classes. Through these initiatives, Salesian College serves as a catalyst for social change in the Himalayan region, embodying the Salesian ethos of education and service.
