Salesian College was first established in Shillong when it obtained affiliation up to the I.A. standard in 1935. In 1936 a devastating fire forced the college to be shifted to Woodcot and Bandel till it was permanently established at Sonada in 1938. In 1948 the first part of the present building was inaugurated and the college got affiliated up to the B.A. standard. In 1962 it was affiliated to the University of North Bengal. In 1969 it was approved for B.A. Hons. in English. In 1978 for B.A. Hons. in History. 1980 it was approved for Education, Bengali and Hindi. In 2006 it received affiliation for Education Honours course. The College opened a Computer Skills Department in 2002, offering the DIT and ADIT courses of C-DAC, Pune, the Computer Application Certificate Course of NBU in 2004.
